Processing Diesel Fuel or WVO
October 17, 2008
The latest hot trend is filtering waste vegetable oil (WVO) or refining dirty diesel oil for use as fuel in diesel engines.
The Frantz Oil Filter is perfect for this type of hobby in that the Frantz Oil Filter will filter out all the dirt, soot, grime, metal particles, sand, and other impurities without altering the quality of the oil itself. Average filtering with the Frantz Oil Filter will filter down to only 1 micron or one-millionth of a meter. An average spin-on canister filter will filter only to about 19 microns.
Some of my customers arrange two or three Frantz Oil Filters in series while others filter the oil several times through the same Frantz Oil Filter. Both systems seem to work with satisfactory results.
Fancy pumps and other arrangements are unnecessary. Some simply place the container of dirty oil high enough that gravity will allow it to flow into a lower second container. Most allow a 5-gallon quantity to filter overnight. Faster processing is possible with the application of a small oil pump or even applying air pressure.
I recommend a pre-filter before processing the oil through the Frantz Oil Filter for longer and better efficiency. A fine screen or cloth works fine. You might even consider a paint filter to remove the larger particles of food and/or sludge.
After about three passes or one pass through three Frantz Oil Filters you are pretty comfortable with your filtered oil to blend it 50% with diesel fuel. Start off with a smaller percentage blend of filtered oil and continue to increase the percentage to your satisfaction. Some engines can run on 100% of your filtered oil.
I am carrying a special Frantz Oil Filter product which eliminates much of the standard engine installation parts which you won’t need. It is even more economical if you acquire your own hose locally. Most any hose will work in this application unlike that of an engine installation which requires hose that is resistant to heat and oil degradation. You probably won’t need the mounting bracket and all the brass fittings, etc. either. Just the basic Frantz Oil Filter will work fine. Order the basic Frantz Oil Filter Item #105 and save $50.00 for this application.
