FRANTZ Toilet Paper cartridges / elements

So what is the talk of the town regarding what toilet paper to use – In a FRANTZ Oil Filter that is?

I personally have searched high and low without finding a roll that meets my high standards. First, what are my standards anyway?

The roll must be at or close to 1000 sheets. It must be dense and tightly wound on the cardboard center tube. It must not easily squeeze or be soft. The center cardboard tube must fit correctly over the base tube of the FRANTZ Oil Filter. It must be the correct diameter but this can be adjusted by removing some turns. It must be at or close to 4.5” tall. It must not contain perfume or other additives.

So where does one locate a TP that satisfies all these standards and why?

The center TP cardboard tube must fit snug over the center metal tube of the FRANTZ Oil Filter so as to not allow oil to pass by without first going through the toilet paper filtering element material. The inside diameter of the toilet paper cardboard should be 1-15/32”. Some might say an inch and one-half is good enough. Well, it isn’t! It is similar to your engine valve guides. You don’t want loose guides otherwise oil will slip past and you will burn oil – bad! If you don’t have a roll of TP that fits snug on the center post you will have oil sneak past with out being filtered. You might as well not have the filter in this case. You are losing filtering efficiency then.

My wife is angry at me because I keep trying different grocery store toilet paper brands. The last try was through an office supply mail order that sells toilet paper. You know how some offices, stores, and gas stations use that cheap see-through-quality toilet paper? While uncomfortable for its designed use, it is pretty good as an oil filter since it is tightly wound on the spool. We can always unwind some turns to get it the right diameter but will the center tube fit properly? Usually, the answer is no.

In my photo section I have posted examples of where one TP tube from a roll actually fits over another TP center tube from another roll. There are no standards for toilet paper. They even sell toilet paper now that you need to purchase an extension unit so it fits on the TP holder in your bathroom. What will we come to next?

While Charmin is a great TP for it’s intended purpose, it is the worst as a consideration for a by-pass oil filter due to it’s squeeze-ability. They make the paper with lots of air folds and gaps in the windings so it squeezes easily but those are just the gaps we don’t want in our filtering TP. Don’t do it.

Some say Scott’s makes a satisfactory roll. I have tried many and haven’t found the Scott secret one – at least not to my standards. Look at the sloppy fit with TP#2 in my photos section. Is that good enough for you? I say no.

I know of some folks who cheat. They get by using a roll of TP that doesn’t fit properly over the center tube of the FRANTZ Oil Filter and take up the slack in size with four or five large “O”-rings. Folks, that is just irresponsible and cheap. Don’t subject your engine to cheap tactics or shortcuts like that.

When the FRANTZ Brand toilet paper filter elements are only $7 for a package of four, why take shortcuts? That’s only $1.75 each. For that low price you don’t need to take shortcuts. FRANTZ OIL FILTERS has contracted with a toilet paper supplier that manufactures the roll with the correct characteristics in size, square count, density, and center tube diameter as shown in another photo in the photo section.
