2002 GMC DURAMAX FRANTZ OIL FILTER INSTALLATION
By Brent Sanchez
Here is how I installed a Frantz Oil Filter on a 2002 GMC Duramax 4X4 pickup. Looking under the hood it quickly became obvious where to mount the filter. I wanted the filter to be easy to service. I have always dreaded crawling under a vehicle to pull hot oil filters. This engine has a good place to mount the filter with several available metric threaded holes.
Using the stock Frantz bracket I elongated one mounting hole and fabricated a “twisted” piece of flat stock to support the outer edge of the bracket. I mounted the filter on the left side of the engine above the power steering pump. It clears the hood mounted on the second set of holes on the bracket but it is close to the hood when closed. It should probably be mounted to the lowest set of holes. It is up to the installer to determine the best location and method to install the Filter. Remember to check your clearances and secure your oil lines with wire ties!
The return oil line went directly to the drilled oil filler cap. The pressure line was run up from the oil filter sandwich adaptor (painted orange to detect oil leaks), utilizing wire looms and fuel cooler lines. Use wire ties to secure and prevent chaffing of the oil lines. I chose to install high quality synthetic oil and a Premium high quality long life spin- on oil filter. I expect to be changing the Frantz TP filter a lot more often than the spin- on filter.
